Describe the need that you’re trying to address.
The Superiorland Library Cooperative manages WiFi and local area networks for 38 public libraries throughout the Upper Peninsula and Northern Lower Peninsulas of Michigan. Ironwood is located on the western end of the U.P.
Superiorland Library Cooperative will partner with Ironwood Carnegie Library and the City of Ironwood to extend internet access to recreational facilities and under-served areas of the City of Ironwood in an effort to provide access to library services in a convenient and efficient manner.
What would be a successful outcome for your project?
Since the suspension of mining activities, this area has experienced high poverty, high unemployment and low income. Recreational activities and tourism play a much more important role in economic development for the region. Ironwood’s Depot Park is the north and western most trailhead for Michigan’s Iron Belle Train, a network of hiking trails that traverse the entire state, will be one point of access for the project. The City of Ironwood operates Curry Park, a seasonal RV park, and WiFi access will be provided to registered campers. In addition, the Ironwood Carnegie Library will work with area schools to identify low income families who cannot afford Internet access at home. The Library will provide limited residential Internet access to K-12 students through use of passworded access to the TVWS network.
